A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory:
For the purposes of this inventory, only current, active faculty members with the titles of teaching professor, assistant/associate professor, or professor were included. Adjunct and Emeritus professors were excluded. This faculty list was generated by the Research Intelligence unit, part of the Office of the Vice-President of Research and Innovation.
To identify University of Victoria faculty members engaged in sustainability research, a bibliometric analysis was conducted using Elsevier’s Scopus database and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). Since 2018, Elsevier has generated SDG search queries to help researchers and institutions track and demonstrate progress toward each of the 17 SDG targets. Those queries are also complimented by a machine learning model, which helps to increase the recall of publications by approximately 10%. Publications captured by these custom search queries and models are then tagged with their relevant SDGs in the Scopus database. Publication data was extracted for each UVic faculty member, and individuals were included in the sustainability researcher inventory if they had an SDG-tagged publication in Scopus within last 3 years (July 2020 – July 2023).
Departments engaged in sustainability research were included if one or more of the confirmed sustainability researchers held an appointment with that department.
