A brief description of the method(s) used to gather data about student commuting:

UVic conducts a biennial transportation study by counting each trip to and from campus on a weekday in October to compile a comprehensive quantitative analysis of the daily trips to and from campus, and the type of transportation modes used. UVic has been conducting this study since 1996.

With the 2023 data not yet compiled, the most recent study was completed in 2021. There were 55,770 one-way trips to and from campus and 24,450 trips were by vehicles with single occupancy and 31,320 (56%) trips were sustainable trips: auto passengers, transit passengers, cyclists, pedestrians, rollerbladers or skateboarders.

Additionally, UVic collects robust data through the purchase of parking passes. This allows us to understand the breakdown of auto trips by students and staff. We know that students purchase parking passes at a factor of 0.3287 compared to staff. When we apply that factor, we know that 8,037 trips (4,018 round trips and 14.5% of trips) are single vehicle occupancy trips by students and 16,413 trips (8,206 round trips or 29.5% of trips) are single vehicle occupancy trips by staff. Single occupancy vehicle trips are important to track because they are the “unsustainable” trips to campus, as opposed to sustainable trips or distance learning.

We are looking forward to receiving updated transportation survey data for 2023, at which time we can complete this same analysis to review quantitative change over time to sustainable mode use as UVic implements a variety of Transportation Demand Management measures, including changes in parking costs and new bike lane construction.

As a note, UVic does also maintain parking occupancy data as it relates to student FTE and has in the past administered qualitative transportation surveys. Both initiatives were last updated in 2019 and were not readministered during COVID.
