Volunteers from our environmentally-minded EnviroWestern student group and the Master's of Environment and Sustainability program provide several one-hour tours throughout the academic term, which can be building-specific or pertain to several buildings on campus. Each guided walk-through specifically focuses on green features implemented in these projects, such as: water and energy efficiency measures, environmentally preferable building materials and construction methods and measures to maximize indoor air quality performance. The tours are also offered to the broader London community.
A brief description of how the student educators are selected:
To select the tour guides, members of EnviroWestern and MES are invited to attend a 1-2 hour training/information session. However, anyone in the academic community who is interested is also welcome to attend. The tour guides are selected based on their level of interest, their ability to present to a small group of people, and their experience about sustainability.
A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive to prepare them to conduct peer outreach:
The student educators receive 2 – hour training on the basics of Green Buildings and LEED at Western. Green Building workshops are given to all MES students. Site visits are also arranged to all of Western’s Leed buildings and facilities, guided by Facilities Management. Online resources are also provided for consultation.
A brief description of the financial and/or administrative support the institution provides to the program (e.g. annual budget and/or faculty/staff coordination):
Time is provided throughout the academic year and summer from Facilities Management personnel. The time provided over the last academic year and summer was approximately 50 hours. There is no budget specifically allocated to this support but it is determined based on the requests and the program requirements.
