A brief description of steps taken to reduce hazardous, special (e.g. coal ash), universal, and non-regulated chemical waste:
Since the majority of the hazardous waste is produced is a result of laboratory activities in the science departments, Alfred State's the efforts to minimize hazardous waste are focused on this area.
The faculty employ the following steps to reduce the amount of waste generated:
* Plan experiments taking into consideration the potential for generating waste materials.
* Maintain an up to date inventory of chemicals.
* Utilize recycled chemicals if available.
* Purchase chemicals in the correct quantities.
* Use non-hazardous substitutes where available.
* Follow appropriate storage recommendations.

Alfred State's Hazardous Waste Management Guide (linked below) describes in detail how we manage and safely dispose of our hazardous, special, universal and other non-regulated chemical waste. In brief:
* Alfred State is considered to be a small quantity generator of hazardous waste.
* Profiles for all hazardous waste streams are created with appropriate permitted vendors.
* All waste is tracked via hazardous waste manifesting procedure.
* Wastes are shipped utilizing approved licensed hazardous waste transporters.
* Disposal is carried out at permitted Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facilities (TSDF) that have the capability to handle the specific type of waste.
