A brief description of the institution’s formal community partnership to advance sustainability:

Safe Streets, a neighborhood organization in the North of Main neighborhood of Binghamton, and the university have engaged in a partnership since 2015 called the Neighborhood Heritage and Sustainability Project. Through this project, we have created and help run a community center that provides numerous services to the local residents. We do community breakfasts every weekend, aimed at feeding people and building community / collaboration. We have hosted sessions around jobs, education, and art/science for kids. During the warmer weather our events go outside to the nearby Walnut Street Park. Other partners in the project include the Broome County Urban League and the Horace Mann Middle School. NYPIRG's Binghamton University campus chapter recruits many student volunteers to promote policies that will benefit our community. Top priorities include renewable energy, drinking water quality, voter mobilization, higher education access, consumer rights, and health and patient rights. Our NYPIRG student volunteers have organized many campaigns on campus to promote social justice, energy efficiency, and awareness of local environmental issues.

The Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) cultivates partnerships that strengthen communities and develop active and engaged citizens. It focuses engagement with not just students, but also faculty and staff to participate in activities that positively impact our community and to create sustainable communities. Since 2010, Binghamton University Students Faculty and Staff have worked locally with VINES (Volunteers Improving Neighborhood Environments, INC.) volunteering through curricular and co-curricular community-engagement and through community-based research projects. VINES is an organization committed to developing a sustainable and just community food system. They do this by bringing together diverse groups of people, with a focus on youth development, to establish community gardens, urban agriculture and community green spaces. They strive to develop and beautify urban sites and empower community members of all ages and abilities. https://vinesgardens.org/
