In recent years, IU has significantly improved its waste-tracking methodology. We believe FY 16 is our most accurate baseline year, rather than 2009 as previously reported, and as used in other categories.

A brief description of the institution's surplus department or formal office supplies exchange program that facilitates reuse of materials:
The policy of Indiana University is to make maximum use of furniture, equipment, and other such property. The Purchasing Department will attempt to redistribute items within the university based on equitable criteria. Any items no longer required by a department or division will be transferred to IU Surplus Stores for resale.
The major objectives of Surplus Stores are to: redistribute assets within the university, relieve the university of unusable assets, and to reduce landfill refuse. Given these policies and guidelines, Surplus Stores is empowered to offer items for sale to the general public once it is determined that no need for that item exists within the university. Some items that are sent to Surplus Stores are clearly ones that may be needed within the university. Therefore, an area is set aside and designated for university department purchases only. However, the vast majority of items located at Surplus Stores are available for purchase by the general public.
In 2015, the Surplus Store launched their "smalls" campaign and now accepts file folders, binders, markers, and other office supplies for resale as well, in addition to furniture and electronic equipment.

IU Print is a global print platform that delivers the core engine for student printing and managed print services for organizations. IU Print looks to deliver a print platform that reduces cost, increases efficiency, is highly secure, and provides maximum flexibility.
Student printing: IU Print delivers printing for students across all campuses. The IU Print platform delivers printing, copying, and scanning functionality in a secure environment for all faculty, staff, and students. Students receive an allotment through the Student Technology Fee that can be used at various locations across all campuses.
