A brief description of any internal sustainability professional development and training opportunities that the institution makes available to non-academic staff:

During annual January and May staff training sessions, there is always at least one session dedicated to sustainability, and often more. It varies each year as staff are able to submit sessions they are interested in.

Starting in Fall, 2022: Campus Operations Tours have been offered which feature sustainability efforts on campus. Tour cover facilities boilers, solar panels, grounds etc and are very popular

Sustainability Office Coordinator has given campus-sustainability focused talks to departmental office coordinators

The sustainability office director has given presentations on themse such as climate adaptation and zero waste initiatives to facilities staff

Because of campus changes in instruction and events during the Covid-19 pandemic, there have been several online discussions of sustainability related topics open to the entire campus community over the past three years

In addition, the Sustainability office has collaborated with the campus communications office to create a training video focused upon how Macalester's zero wate goals and how to sort waste. This video has been shared widely on campus newsletters and social media channels.


A brief description of any external professional development and training opportunities in sustainability that are supported by the institution :

Sustainability staff members and occasionally other staff attend sustainability related conferences. Travel is paid for by the Sustainability Office and sometimes by other departments (Institute for Global Citizenship, Faculty Travel Reimbursement).

During the Fall 2023, Sustainability office staff and student employees traveled to the UMACS (upper midwest association for campus sustainability) to present.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Macalester Sustainability office has begun to stream conferences more frequently. Virtual attendance has allowed the office to stream conference presentations in common areas and make them available to the entire campus community.
