A brief description of active student groups focused on sustainability:
The EcoMiners - Students for a Sustainable Future is a group of approximately 12 students working to raise awareness on campus of sustainability initiatives. They have participated in Earth Day events, America Recycles Day, Beyond Coal Campaign, and other activities. Currently, they provide free coffee and hot chocolate to anyone who visits them with a reusable mug.
Their biggest input is with RecycleMania. They help with data gathering and mini-events to encourage students to participate.
Additional organizations with a focus on sustainability, but not a direct impact on the campus include:
Engineers without Borders - (Inter)national organization with a focus on providing sustainable water solutions to emerging communities globally. Primarily focused upon delivering water systems in Central and South America.
Ducks Unlimited - wetland conservation group focused on protecting habitats of waterfowl.

The Missouri S&T Solar Village has an organic greenhouse where the students and faculty living in the village are able to gain organic gardening experiences. There are 3 composters present. The compost generated is to be used in the greenhouse. The residents of all four homes have the ability to take part in the greenhouse and share the produce that is grown.
The Missouri S&T Solar Village consists of six solar-powered homes designed and built by Missouri University of Science and Technology students. Missouri S&T students began building the solar houses in 2000. The homes were constructed as part of the university’s participation in an international student design competition, the Solar Decathlon.
These solar homes serve not only as campus housing, but are also used to educate the public, provide research opportunities, and demonstrate current and future GHG reduction steps available to the community.
Any Missouri S&T student can live in the Solar Village. . Tenants are encouraged to practice sustainable living by watching water usage, conserving energy, recycling, and composting.

The Missouri S&T Solar House Team is a group of undergraduate and graduate students dedicated to creating sustainable homes.
Mission: The Missouri S&T Solar House Team is a student design team that seeks to better the University, community, and environment through focused research, public education, and sustainable design and to expand team members' knowledge regarding group dynamics and the integration of architecture and technology with dwelling space design and function while familiarizing members with product development, marketing, and business skills through self-administration of business duties necessary to run the team which will prepare members for leadership roles in industry.
We strive to further research on renewable energy and energy efficient technologies and to promote an eco-friendly lifestyle. As a student design team, we are rewarded for our work with a unique and priceless experience that will benefit us in our future careers. We are one of two teams to be accepted four consecutive times into the prestigious Solar Decathlon Competition hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy. For this competition, we design, engineer, construct, and market a solar powered home. We partner with numerous corporations for support, and display a wide range of their products in our homes.

The Center for sustainability hosts several sustainability events that are open to students. Center for Sustainability hosts and coordinates a city-wide Earth Day Celebration each year. Rolla Earth Day is a community-wide event to showcase sustainable businesses in the area and new ideas. Center for Sustainability works in collaboration with Eco Miners, a Missouri S&T student organization dedicated to sustainability, to host events such as Recycle Mania and Earth Week.

The Solar Village, a collection of six solar-powered homes in the Missouri S&T Solar Village, is open to students and the public for tours. The Solar Village is a demonstration of sustainable living principles.

Any Missouri S&T student can live in the Solar Village. Because it is on campus, it counts as Campus Approved Housing for freshman and sophomore students who are required to live on campus. The Solar Village is first open to members of the solar house team. If no one from the Solar House team wants to live there, it is then open to members of the Student Design and Experiential Learning Center. After that, the house is available to the entire campus. Tenants are encouraged to practice sustainable living by watching water usage, conserving energy, recycling, and composting. The goal of the Solar Village is for the houses to produce enough energy to be self-sustaining. Technological improvements made since the first home was built help make the newer homes more sustainable.
