A brief description of the program, including examples of peer-to-peer outreach activities:

The E-Team is a group of dedicated faculty and staff that collaborates to educate campus community members on relevant sustainability issues and provides a platform for engagement in sustainability-related projects and practices linked to the 2016 Climate Action and Sustainability Plan. Additionally, the Team organizes campaigns and projects to foster environmental awareness in the College community. Examples of this include the HR monthly newsletter The Resource sent to all employees of the College, as well as regular email communications promoting programs, specific film series (all sustainability related, i.e. ocean acidification, the Penobscot River and its environmental importance to the State of Maine, and the impacts of high impact farming practices), speaker series that focused on specific Maine environment issues, and the Sustainability Festival which is an educational event intended to reach the entire campus community and surrounding local towns. These events are hosted annually and topics are relevant to current local, national, and global issues.

They either volunteer or are hand-picked by the faculty/staff in underrepresented areas.


A brief description of the formal training that the employee educators receive to prepare them to conduct peer outreach:

A liaison from the Sustainability Task Force participates on the E-Team to facilitate education, communication, and collaboration.


A brief description of the financial and/or administrative support the institution provides to the program (e.g. annual budget and/or paid faculty/staff coordination):

The Sustainability Task Force supports the E-Team and there is typically a budget of $2000 for events.

A brief description of the program, including examples of peer-to-peer outreach activities (2nd program):

The New Hire Orientation program provides new employees with important information on their first day of employment. Included in this program is a document highlighting Saint Joseph's College commitment to sustainability practices, definition of and how sustainability "fits" at the College, what we are doing to become more sustainable on campus and examples of this work. The Human Resources Representative discusses this document with the new employee and spends time reviewing and describing our efforts. The SJC Community Day gathers new employees together as a group quarterly for the purpose of further introduction to what the College has to offer them, i.e. wellness, campus recreation, education benefits, etc. Sustainability is a topic that is covered in this program; it's meaning, various initiatives, examples, and Saint Joseph's College commitment to become carbon neutral by 2036.

Sustainability Task Force member Kimberly Post was selected due to her passion for everything related to sustainability and experience with the topic. Samantha Smith in Human Resources is responsible for introducing sustainability to new hires on their first day and providing a level of detail that accurately reflects Saint Joseph's College commitment.

Formal training is handled by the Sustainability Task Force.

The financial support is the employees time to present the material. Human Resources covers the financial cost and administrative support to produce the new hire document.
