A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation (including how multiple dimensions of sustainability are addressed):
First years and transfers are divided into smaller groups with Orientation Leaders to integrate them into the community. Over a period of three days, Orientation Leaders participate in various activities/info session/chat sessions with the new students. Sustainability is one of many topics that are discussed (with an emphasis on zero-waste program and how various items are disposed of: landfill, recycling, food scraps). During their first night on campus, Resident Assistants (RAs) hold a floor meeting in which they go over proper sorting of materials (each floor has a trash/recycling/food scrap collection area)
On the second day of Orientation, all new students participate in SMC Connects. New students spend an afternoon with peers and St. Mike’s faculty and staff and begin to feel what it's like to truly be part of this community. Acknowledging our Edmundite tradition of holistic education, welcoming hospitality, and responsive care for one another and the planet, this afternoon places students in groups to learn, be active, and enjoy the company of new friends. There are a plethora of group outings that covering nature/wilderness, food and sustainable agriculture, social justice and personal well-being/sustainability just to name a few.
