Earth Day Clean-Up 2022

A brief description of the campaign:

To celebrate Earth Day and Salve’s immaculate campus, Mission Integration and Salve’s Grounds Department host a campus clean-up day for the critical concern of Earth! Sign up as a team of up to 6 or an individual and we'll put you on a team for the clean-up and participate in a fun competition to see who can pick up the most! Meet back at Gerety for some refreshments and to learn who wins following the Clean-Up at 1:30pm. Gloves, bags, and tools will be provided. All are welcome (staff, faculty, students, and friends of Salve) and participants are invited to dress down!

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:

55 student, faculty, staff, and community members competed to see who could pick up the most trash, recycling, etc on campus and surrounding Newport area. People picked up 220lbs in ~1 hour on Earth Day. In a survey, one attendee reflected "“The earth day cleanup...wasn't just a plan or a hope, it was a tangible action. Also nice to be in community with my colleagues with such a low-stakes responsibility of picking up trash.”

Earth Week Thrift Pop-Up

A brief description of the campaign (2nd campaign):

Samantha Parsons ’23 and the Office of Student Engagement for a pop-up thrift shop with any kind of donation. Thrift shops by nature are sustainable. This Earth Week thrift shop will have clothing in a wide range of sizes. All proceeds and unsold clothing will be donated to local community partners. While thrift shopping, check out Salve Regina student artisans, enjoy some snacks and guess how many pieces of trash are in the water bottle brick for the chance to win a prize. https://today.salve.edu/celebrate-earth-week-at-salve-regina-with-variety-of-events-and-activities-2/


A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):

In 2022 $550 was raised for Roger's Closet at Rogers High School in Newport, RI and all unsold clothing and accessory items were donated to Roger's Closet.
In 2023, students from PHL-260: Climate Change: Science, Policy, and Ethics, taught by Dr. Craig Condella and Dr. Jameson Chace, as they host a sustainable thrift shop for Earth Month. All proceeds and unsold items will be donated to the Housing Hotline.
