A brief description of the employee educators program (1st program):

Skoden and Stoodis – both are terms commonly used in First Nations communities. They have become rallying cries for reconciliation and recognition of Indigenous rights. Skoden (slang for Let’s Go Then) is the initial class that we ask all faculty interested in incorporating Indigenous content into their curriculum. Stoodis (slang for Let’s Do This which is the response to SKODEN), is the community of practice of Skoden graduates. All graduates of Skoden are then invited to participate in Stoodis, the community of practice of Skoden graduates where opportunities to continue dialogue, sharing and curriculum planning continue.

In Skoden, instructors, staff and administrators consider how to decolonize and indigenize those aspects of their work at Seneca they are responsible for. Through a lens of looking back to understand how to go forward in reconciliation, participants learn about Indigenous teachings, Canadian colonization, the history and impact of treaties and contemporary Indigenous challenges and resilience. This learning opportunity will assist efforts by Seneca Polytechnic to improve all students' experience respond to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action and the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA People Calls for Justice. Skoden encourages non-Indigenous instructors, staff and administrators to consider what it means to be a treaty partner, how they can address the Calls to Action and Calls for Justice in their own practice, and how to stand with Indigenous communities. It is facilitated by Seneca faculty members Darcey Dachyshyn, Randy Pitawanakwat and Camille Di Iulio and supports the efforts of First Peoples@Seneca. These members are from the Indigenous community at Seneca, who share personal stories, colonial history, treaty history and ultimately our collective shared history as treaty partners. Much of Randy’s knowledge is a collective of understandings from oral tradition and experiences throughout his life in Wiikwemkoong and Atikameksheng Anishnawbek.

A brief description of the employee educators program’s target audience (1st program):

All Seneca employees, faculty, staff and administrators are welcome and encouraged to participate in the twelve-week Skoden experience. They are encouraged throughout and following Skoden to consider how the learning applies to them in their various roles at Seneca.
