A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory:

First, we evaluated grants, intellectual contributions, and presentations that in annual activity reports submitted by ranked faculty. In addition, we searched departmental web pages to determine additional faculty with sustainability-related evaluated research areas.

A brief description of notable accomplishments during the previous three years by faculty and/or staff engaged in sustainability research:

Faculty associated with UW-La Crosse's River Studies Center (RSC) continue to conduct research that deepen our understanding about using and managing our natural resources in more sustainably. Several RSC faculty have long-standing research programs that evaluate risk of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems to exposure from mercury contamination, most of which was generated from coal-fired power plants. Their body of research has been used by policy makers at national and international levels and is playing a key role in lower mercury emission standards established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Dr. Jo Arney (Political Science) continues to conduct scholarly research in Yellowstone National Park that creatively engages park resource managers and external stakeholders in productive conservations on hot-issue topics including snowmobiling and dispersal of buffalo that potentially carry brucellosis to rangelands lying adjacent to the park. She is a recognized leader in addressing issues associated with stewardship of public lands.

Other faculty are engaging in diverse sustainability topics including:
• Physician professional autonomy in the age of Obamacare
• Responses of plant and animal community to invasive species
• The use of a mathematical technique known as "intent scales" to assess economic impact wildlife festivals
• Social sustainability issues for individuals with disabilities
• How air pollution molecules affect cloud formation
• Organic and inorganic contaminant in fish
• Restoration of degraded ecosystems and effects of fragmentation on wildlife populations
• Environmental sustainability of selected aspects of our food system.
• The development of new materials for photovoltaic and photocatalytic applications
• How we become connected to the natural places in our world and how they affect our cognitive, psychological, and emotional development
• Access to health care systems
• Examination of past human cultures in the La Crosse region and how they used natural resources, how they disposed of their garbage, and what we can learn and apply to modern practices
• Environmental philosophy and recreation resource management
• Diversity and access to human rights, specifically in relation to LGBTQ communities of practice
