ICC Snow and Ice Procedure Policy

The Grounds Maintenance Department has developed a procedure to perform snow and ice operations for all varying weather conditions. Personnel will respond each time we are notified that weather conditions include the possibility of creating a hazard for the public. A few key elements in implementing an efficient snow and ice control program include receiving timely weather information and proper timing and use of materials.

Accurate weather forecasting is imperative in deciding which of the various operational procedures will be followed. An operation may be initiated in advance of precipitation or freezing conditions depending on the estimated start time or intensity of the storm. Internet forecasts, together with the national weather service reports, provide for accurate weather information and have greatly assisted increasing the effectiveness of the snow removal and ice control program. The Grounds Maintenance Department will continue to rely upon these two services plus actual field reports by departmental personnel in the immediate area to determine what equipment and material to utilize during the course of the storm.

ICC is always looking for more sustainable products to aid in the removal of salt and ice in the winter months. Products that we have tested include liquid magnesium chloride, liquid beet juice, granular magnesium chloride, granular magnesium/ potassium blend and a granular potassium. We have blended filter sand with our road salt to cut down on the total amount of road salt applied over the course of a winter season which helps decrease the possibility of salt run off or damage to turf. We have constructed a salt bin that keeps our small supply of road salt covered to also ensure we are getting the most out of the product and also prevents runoff into turf areas.
