With over 200 researchers across all academic departments conducting sustainability focused or sustainability inclusive research, Michigan Tech is a leading institution in creating knowledge and innovation for a more sustainable world. Our interdisciplinary centers and institutes support research across many aspects of sustainability, bridging environmental, economic and social domains.

Sustainability Demonstration House

A brief description of the second program/initiative/accomplishment:

The Sustainability Demonstration House provides students with the opportunity to become involved in a demonstration of sustainable living within the community of Houghton. Residents of the house are encouraged to recycle and compost, while exercising good habits of sustainability by being mindful of power and water consumption. Residents will work side by side with the Alternative Energy Enterprise to showcase that sustainability can be extraordinarily successful, even in Houghton’s harsh climate.

Project-based sustainability learning

A brief description of the third program/initiative/accomplishment:

At Michigan Tech, students of all majors can be directly involved in campus and community sustainability through their coursework. Sustainability features prominently in our enterprise program and senior design/capstone offerings. Those programs afford students the opportunities to work with interdisciplinary teams to analyze and innovate across various sustainability challenges, giving them real world experience in tackling wicked problems.
