San Diego State University (SDSU) operates under a shared governance philosophy — where each member of the community (whether faculty, student, staff, or administrator) has an opportunity to weigh in on matters of policy and procedure. SDSU's governing bodies include the Office of the President, the University Senate, and Associated Students.

A brief description of the campus-community council or equivalent body that gives external stakeholders a regular voice in institutional decisions that affect them:
San Diego State University participates in a quarterly meeting that is facilitated by the San Diego City Council District 9 Councilmember, Sean elo-Rivera, who represents the College Area. Included in that group are the Councilmember and his staff, city staff from Code Enforcement and Environmental Services department, San Diego Police Department, community members, SDSU Police, and SDSU administrators. These meetings help address issues in the College Area that are related to a University being centered in the middle of a suburban neighborhood. This group works together to find solutions and help build community between the University, the City and the residents.
