South Dakota State University has installed LED lighting in various locations across campus. As the price of LED's continues to decrease, more LED fixtures will be installed.

South Dakota State University has made it a standard to install occupancy sensors in occupied spaces, both in new construction and during renovation projects.

South Dakota State University has made it a standard to install energy meters and connect them to the building automation system (BAS) for each utility on new construction and major renovation projects. Facilities & Services monitors energy usage within the BAS. Monthly reports are reviewed by the Energy Conservation Engineer to identify areas for savings and energy reduction.

The State of South Dakota requires the purchase of Energy Star certified appliances. SDSU has made it a standard to purchase Energy Star certified appliances when they are available.

South Dakota State University has a commitment to energy efficiency and conservation. Facilities & Services has had an Energy Conservation Engineer since 1999. This position is dedicated to creating a more efficient campus. Scope of work includes energy analysis and conservation identification, project proposals and development, increasing and maintaining metered utilities, and conservation habits.
