All efforts have been part of operational procedures.The numbers above only pertain to 1 year (FY15), but in the last 3 years SDSU has implemented single stream recycling. Each year the Student Sustainability Council also participated in RecycleMania and promoted recycling throughout the competition. The Fishback Center for Early Childhood Education also has implemented a drop-off location for toner/ink cartridges as a fundraiser for their group. Scrap metal is collected and re-sold, pallets and removed trees are mulched for campus landscaping. Sand from winter de-icing is also collected is reused.

When SDSU has to chop down trees, they chip the wood and use it as mulch. This is included in the total waste calculations.
Facilities & Services sweeps up winter debris from de-icing measures on campus streets and sidewalks. Bowes Construction then re-purposes that recycled sand for other projects.

SDSU does have efforts in several of the other areas mentioned, but weights are not available. Efforts include state surplus property exchange program, residence hall move-in/out recycling/donation options, chemicals, and paint. Facilities & Services has also worked to re-purpose or reuse old materials from past construction projects. These include using old windows in new buildings or re-purposing old doors into desks.
