The Iowa Center for Research by Undergraduates promotes undergraduate involvement in mentored research and creative projects at the University of Iowa. The program serves all degree-seeking undergraduates at the university across all disciplines of study, staff, and faculty and work to create opportunities, provide support, and share the knowledge that comes from these collaborative efforts.
The Office of Sustainability regularly mentors student class and independent research projects. There are various funding sources to support undergraduate pursuit of research, including internal grant funding, financial support for research fellowships, and other opportunities.
Does the institution have a program to encourage faculty from multiple disciplines or academic programs to conduct research in sustainability topics?:
A brief description of the faculty research program, including the incentives provided and any positive outcomes during the previous three years:
The Office of the Vice President for Research offers assistance to faculty interested in conducting research. Assistance can range from administrative grant management to providing internal seed grants; many of these grants are sustainability focused.
Has the institution published written policies and procedures that give positive recognition to interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary, and multidisciplinary research during faculty promotion and/or tenure decisions?:

The University of Iowa values and recognizes the benefits of interdisciplinary research. Promotion and tenure decisions are conducted by each department. Many departments give positive recognition to interdisciplinary, trans‐disciplinary, and multi‐disciplinary research during faculty promotion and tenure decisions.
Does the institution have ongoing library support for sustainability research and learning?:
A brief description of the institution’s library support for sustainability research, including any positive outcomes during the previous three years:
The University of Iowa library provides research guides in various departments including Civil and Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Geographical and Sustainability Sciences, and Toxicology.
The Sciences Library has worked closely with the Office of Sustainability (OoS) for the last 5 years. Partnership with OoS and the Iowa Women’s Archives included the exhibit, guide, and program for: “My Friend, Rachel Carson: Shirley Briggs and the Iowa Connection to Silent Spring." Library staff were invited to present the program for other groups around Iowa, including the Midwest Environmental Education Conference, Iowa City Bird Club and the Muscatine Rotary Club. The Sciences Library participated in the Sustainability Festival in 2014.
A UI Libraries staff member has been a liaison to the Green Adventures Living Learning Community, and taught sessions to the partner course, Green Adventures: This is What Happens CSI:1220:0001 Fall 2015 and 2016.
The Chemistry Department also includes an active environmental chemistry research group, focusing on the chemistry of atmospheric aerosols and their impacts on health and climate. The Sciences Library has participated in the annual ACS-sponsored Iowa Climate Festival since 2014, and created a guide to provide more information to kids, educators, general audiences, and researchers.
