The name of the campaign(s):
Do it in the Dark

A brief description of the campaign(s):

Do it in the Dark is an energy saving competition. The goal is to educate students about energy use, and the ways that they can reduce consumption. In 2010, Williams took advantage of our real time metering to give daily results to students, with the winning dorm in each category being the one that accumulated the most points in the daily competitions. The dormitory that shows the largest decrease in energy use over the week receives points to spend at Williams' snack bar.

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign(s):

An intern worked during the summer of 2010 to determine whether there was a decrease in dorm energy use as a result of the competition. He determined that the largest predictor of energy use in the spring semester was daylight hours - as days got longer, energy use naturally decreased, which caused some of the results of the competition to appear overly positive. When he controlled for the change in daylight, several of the dorms did show a decrease in energy use as a result of the competition. In future competition, we will take day length in to consideration when determining the baseline against which dorms' performance is measured.
