Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Saw Kill Watershed Community Group

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

The Saw Kill Watershed Community (SKWC) is a notable innovation that Bard College has initiated in partnership with our surrounding municipalities, local science and history groups, and concerned citizens. This "town and gown" partnership is unique in combining community-development and science goals--through monthly meetings, citizen science opportunities, and place-based education. Real science is being generated through student/non-student monitoring of water quality, plants, and wildlife and real community is being generated through shared learning/teaching experiences. Real environmental change is being implemented through on-the-ground stewardship efforts like riparian buffer restoration and assisting migrating wildlife. The effort would not take place in our community without grant funding acquired by a Bard faculty member. Through the group Bard students have developed and presented Senior Projects. The scientist in charge of the effort has a unique approach to putting community needs first. This is exemplified by the development of a four member leadership team of which he is just one member and the community the majority members.
