Give & Go Green

A brief description of the campaign:

In the spring of 2022, the Office of Sustainability, in collaboration with students, lead a campaign to reduce the amount of items sent to landfill during move out and to create a circular economy with those items. Student workers collected the discarded and donated items during move-out, including clothes, fridges, books, dorm goods, in a program called Give and Go Green. These gently used items, previously destined for landfill, were sorted and either donated or stored over the summer. Items that were not kept were donated to Wearable Collections, Good Will, Riverside Church, Grad Bag, and other local non-for profit agencies. The items stored were resold to incoming students in the fall at reduced prices at the Green Sale during Fall 2022 move-in. At the Green Sale, students are able to learn through experience and materials provided about the benefits of buying used and limiting their consumption.


A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:

The campaign successfully reached students as we were able to collect enough items to donate to our partners. In total, 21,000lbs were diverted from landfill with 5,000lbs finding new homes with incoming students.

Campus Compost Campaign

A brief description of the campaign (2nd campaign):

In the Fall of 2022 Barnard switched from and organics only collection to a compost collection which could now accept all organic waste, plus soiled paper based/compostable products. We did the following to educate the entire community including students, faculty, staff and visitors:

-NSOP (New Student Orientation) education campaigns that showed incoming students how to compost on campus. Information was provided in mandatory programing, the first year sustainability guide, and with students standing at waste stations helping with sorting during meals.

-Waste-sorting education programming in Hewitt Dining Hall throughout the semester with members of the Office of Sustainability. Both students and employees have access to the dining halls.

-Tabling on campus, students were offered a reward for taking survey about composting in dining hall

-Educational information on campus composting shared to students and employees via campus-wide email alerts, newsletters, and social media.

-Signs posted around campus to alert all to the changes including visitors.


A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):

Implementing and promoting composting initiatives on campus has created a positive impact — when compositing was first introduced in August 2022, there were 1.24 tons of organic compost recycling collected. This increased significantly, with 3.16 tons of organic compost recycling in September 2022 and 2.24 tons in November 2022.
