The cultural assessment was developed for Spring 2023. It was developed after reviewing a variety of other assessments within STARS and talking with faculty in the Environmental Science Department as well as staff in Institutional Research. We combined our literacy and culture survey and will repeat each year we submit STARS.

All students were emailed the survey multiple times throughout the span of nine days. The survey was administered through Qualtrics and opened on January 25th and closed on February 3rd, 2023.

Q2 - How much have you heard about the following Barnard Sustainability Initiatives?
Most students knew about our visible/daily initiatives such as composting, academic offerings, and sustainable move out. They were much less aware of policy and facility operations.

Sustainability and environment is very important to our students. For example:
Sustainability is important to 97.06% of students. 70.32% of students indicated that they have an increased sustainable lifestyle since attending Barnard. 88.47% of students think climate, sustainability and environmental justice should be a core requirement.
Q5, Q6, Q7 - Waste reduction & recycling behaviors/water use/Energy
Most students regularly practice water use reduction, energy reduction practices and do simple daily waste reduction (water bottles, recycling, bring bags), however, they are much less inclined to compost, by second hand clothing or used goods and unplug devices and chargers.
