The newly created Opportunity Center (Fall 2022) is designed to provide awareness and training for diversity, equity, and inclusion. It is led by a steering committee of faculty and administration and headed by the Assistant Provost. This center was created at the direction of the South Dakota legislature with purpose of lowering barriers and creating opportunities for all students.

Related Organizations and Activities:

The Title IX Coordinator deals with claims related to sexual harassment and hostile learning environment.

The Director of Human Resources takes all other DEI cases and other forms of harassment.

Residence Life conducts programing under the heading Multicultural Discovery, in which students are asked to focus on particular areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The Dean of Students hosts open forums for students to discuss any concerns related to DEI. She brings these concerns to the university administration for documentation and resolution.

A brief description of the institution’s cultural competence, anti-oppression, anti-racism, and/or social inclusion trainings and activities:

State legislation prohibits requiring such training or participation in related activities. However, through its mission, current enrollment management plan, and current strategic plan, BHSU reiterates its commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. Among its major, related activities are the following:
Three weeks of awareness programing.

1. Black History Awareness Week. With food, a movie, informational fair and outside speaker.
2. Pride Week. Four different speakers for the week. Exhibition of the AIDS quilt. Speakers invited to campus to discuss major topics—International Issues for LGBTQ+ people, The History of Stonewall, the History of the AIDS pandemic.
3. Native American Awareness Week. Multiple speakers from the community and alumni and the annual Pow Wow hosted by BHSU for the region.

New Student Orientation: “Tap Someone Who…” A program designed to help students recognize the common experiences of bias in themselves and others.

Residence Life: Training for identifying and stopping micro-aggressions, Fall 2022.
