Jersey-Friendly Yards (website: www.JerseyYards.org) is part of a Jersey-Friendly Yards initiative - a flagship program of the Barnegat Bay Partnership (BBP). BBP is a National Estuary Program that was legislated into existence, and one of only 28 that exist in the entire US! We are lucky to have the BBP housed on the Ocean County College campus, where our Kean Ocean students attend classes. Jersey-Friendly Yards (JFY) is a statewide program. The website offers many tools and resources for homeowners, schools and municipalities to create healthy landscapes through incorporating best practices, as per the "8 Steps to a Jersey-Friendly Yard": 1) Plan Before you Plant, 2) Start with Healthy Soil, 3) Water Wisely 4) Fertilize Less 5) Minimize Risks when Managing Pests 6) Reduce Lawn Size 7) Create Wildlife Habitat, and 8) Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. The website hosts a JFY Plant Database consisting of over 400 native plants to choose from using search filters to determine the most appropriate native plants for the specific soil, water and light conditions in the landscape. One of the Kean Ocean adjunct professors who teaches Principles of Environmental Soil Science, assigns students an activity to use the tools and resources on the website.
