Employee Assistance Program (academic and non-academic staff)
Kean University cares about the health and well-being of its employees and recognizes that a variety of personal issues can disrupt their personal and work lives. Personal challenges, such as family and parenting issues, emotional concerns such as anxiety, anger, grief or depression, and legal and financial difficulties, can affect employee health, well-being and job performance.
Comprehensive Assistance and Referral for Employees - Employee Assistance Program (C.A.R.E. EAP) offers screening, information, counseling, referral and support services for all full-time Kean University employees. It is designed to help employees manage work and life to further their physical and emotional well-being.
Consultations between an employee and the EAP counselor are strictly confidential. No charge is involved for visits by the employee to the Employee Assistance Program. Visits to the EAP counselor are limited to six (6) sessions. If further counseling or health services are necessary, the EAP counselor will attempt to assist the employee in transitioning to another health care provider that participates in his or her current medical plan.
Appointments with the EAP counselor may be scheduled at a confidential location on campus or off campus.

Kean Counseling Center for students: Mental Health Education, Outreach and Consultation
The Kean Counseling Center offers short-term mental health services to enrolled students of Kean university at no additional cost. The Counseling Center provides mental health education, outreach and consultation throughout the year. Here are some typical topics:
• Drug and alcohol education.
• Sexual assault awareness.
• Stress management and wellness awareness activities.
• Lectures and presentations to classes and specialized groups.
• Brochures and literature on a variety of mental health topics.
Free on-line mental health screening available and a free digital hub to help individuals address their mental health needs. The resource hub includes several videos including:
• Tips for Managing Social Isolation
• Wellness Tips for Improving Your Mental Health
• Difficulty Sleeping
• The Connection Between Mental Health & Physical Health
Individual counseling and Group counseling are available. Individual counseling affords the opportunity to speak with a trained clinician who will listen without judgment or criticism and help to identify goals and then work with students to make changes in their lives.
Group counseling is also led by a trained clinician, and has the added benefit of having other group members who share concerns and can offer support and feedback from a peer perspective.
A student may be referred for a consultation with a psychiatrist to assess the student’s appropriateness for medication, provide information, answer any questions the student may have and prescribe medication if indicated.

Smoke Free Air Act
As of April 2006, Kean University became “Smoke Free”; this means that in following with the NJ state regulations of the smoke free air act, Kean updated its policy and prohibits smoking in any and all public buildings on campus, private offices, maintenance areas, all state vehicles and in or around the grounds of the Child Care Facility in Campus School North. In addition, any individuals who must smoke are required to stay a minimum of three (3) feet from any building entrance.
The following is the state’s regulation: As of April 15, 2006, all indoor workplaces and public places became smoke free. This law, enacted by the senate and general assembly of New Jersey, protects employees and the public from secondhand smoke. Signage is required at every public entrance and must be properly maintained where smoking is prohibited. These signs will be placed at all main entrance doors within the next few weeks. Signs also must state that violators may be fined. The following fines can be levied if someone is caught or is turned in for breaking this law:
• A fine of not less than $250 for the first offense
• $500 for the second offense
• $1,000 for each subsequent offense
Enforcement at Kean University will be the responsibility of all University personnel. Anyone found smoking inside any public buildings on campus, private offices, maintenance areas or state vehicles will be subject to progressive disciplinary action by the University
