EcoChallenge

A brief description of the campaign, including how students and/or employees were engaged:

Seattle University’s annual EcoChallenge is an opportunity for faculty, staff, and students to learn how their everyday behaviors impact our environment and communities and to adopt new habits to build a just and sustainable world. For 3 weeks, teams of 1-4 participants take up a challenge to learn, act, advocate for and share about sustainability-related issues (each week has a different theme).

This program helps create greater awareness and learning of sustainable practices that can be adopted in daily lives. It also inspires students/faculty/and staff to adopt new habits and contribute to making their work and life environment more sustainable, healthy, and just.

Recyclemania

A brief description of the campaign, including how students and/or employees were engaged (2nd campaign):

Seattle University's annual Recyclemania event is an 8-week friendly competition between colleges and universities to reduce waste and improve waste diversion on campuses all over the US and Canada. The goal of the event at SU is for students and faculty to think critically about how much, and how often they toss items away that will end up in the landfill instead of compost or being recycled.


A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):

--SU participated in Recyclemania for the first time in Winter quarter 2017. SU finished 12th out of 190 colleges and universities across the United States and Canada in the Waste Diversion Competition, with a combined recycling and composting rate of 67.53% over the eight-week period.
--Through Recyclemania, Facilities Services learned that it could adjust its waste pickup schedule and save an estimated $24,000 per year.
--Many community members collected clothes, office supplies, appliances, books, batteries, plastic bags, packaging material, and other goods and brought them to campus for SU's Community Recycles Day (organized as part of Recylemania): over 1,200 pounds of re-usable items were collected for donation; and over 1,500 pounds of electronics were collected for recycling.
--At the 2017 RecycleMania kickoff, Garbology, volunteers went through all of the landfill trash from one day on campus and were able to divert 78lbs of recycleables and 169lbs of compostable materials from the landfill.
--143 students, faculty, and staff took the SU Recycles Pledge during Recyclemania
