At the beginning of 2023, UMass Chan worked our sustainability staff and with consultants, GreenerU, to develop a survey that assesses both sustainability literacy and sustainability culture.
A brief description of how a representative sample was reached (if applicable) and how the assessment(s) were administered :
The survey was administered to the UMass Chan community through Qualtrics and sent to the campus primarily through the Growing Green newsletter. Every member of the community receives the Growing Green newsletter. A week later, a follow-up email blast was sent out to the email addresses who had not responded to the survey.
A follow-up assessment is scheduled for February 2024 and will take place annually going forward.
A brief summary of results from the literacy assessment(s):
The Sustainability Literacy and Cultural Assessment was sent out to the campus community when spring semester resumed in February 2023. Data collection is complete and listed below are examples of the survey's findings. A knowledge of sustainability was demonstrated in 10 of the questions within the assessment.
121 community members completed the survey: 85 staff people, 10 faculty, and 16 doctoral students of which 65% identify as women.
- 43% of respondents were "not aware at all" that the University of Massachusetts has a system-level Sustainability Policy
- When asked, "which of the following are current or predicted effects of climate change? (select
all that apply)," the top three choices were "wildfires," "drought," and "flooding."
- When asked, "How much of the Earth's water is fit for human consumption?" 49.5% (50 respondents)
- 97% of respondents correctly identified the meaning of "carbon footprint"
