A brief description of the certified/verified sources of clean and renewable electricity:

UW-Eau Claire participates in multiple programs which create Renewable Energy Credits (RECS). These RECS offset our carbon emissions. The three programs are renewable connect, solar connect, and Universities of Wisconsin green power purchases.

2006 Wisconsin Act 141 directed the Department of Administration (DOA) to set goals for the use of renewable energy by the six state agencies that consume the great majority of electricity purchased by the state. The State of Wisconsin purchases green energy through several contracts throughout the state, which is then apportioned to each state agency. One of these agencies is the University of Wisconsin System. State-purchased green energy is broken out from there to individual campuses based on percentage of energy used in the UW System. These contracts are phasing out within the next decade.

The UW-Eau Claire Student Office of Sustainability has also purchased renewable energy credits through Xcel Energy’s renewable*connect and solar*connect programs. Renewable*connect is a rate paid by the Student Office of Sustainability to subscribe to renewable energy such as solar and wind power. The solar*connect program is a subscription to the local solar field in Eau Claire, WI. Xcel Energy explicitly state that they do not retain the RECS and instead retire them on behalf of the university for both programs. More information on Xcel Energy’s programs can be found here: https://wi.my.xcelenergy.com/s/renewable/renewable-energy-claims
