My understanding and awareness of sustainability related issues has increased since I have become a student at Fresno State.

I would prefer more sustainability-related content in my courses.

I think that universities should be sustainability role models in their daily operations (for example, water and energy conservation, exemplary recycling program, environmental and social issues awareness).

I feel that Fresno State is doing a good job of modeling sustainability in its daily operations (for example, water and energy conservation, exemplary recycling program, environmental and social related issues awareness).

A brief description of how the literacy assessment was developed and/or when it was adopted:

We developed our survey based on a literacy and culture survey from Cal Poly Humboldt and the CSU Chancellor's Office for our 2020 STARS report. The survey from 2020 was shortened for this submission.

A brief description of how a representative sample was reached (if applicable) and how the assessment(s) were administered :

We administer this survey before sustainability presentations to classes or clubs. Some of the classes that were surveyed included Asian American Studies 15, Honors 20, or Recreation Administration 145. The survey was administered to the Sustainability Club as well as attendees of the Sustainability Club's event for World Sustainability & Climate Action Days.

A brief summary of results from the literacy assessment(s):

Keep in mind that the results are not necessarily representative of the predominant student body.

Common misconceptions were discovered: (1) most students do not know the most effective way to combat climate change; (2) most students do not know Fresno State's source of drinking water; (3) most students do not know that the US makes up ~5% of the world's population and 10-49% of the world's energy consumption; (4) most students do not know the ecological services that rivers provide. These misconceptions are interesting because of the relevance those topics have to Fresno State students.

Most students also indicated: (1) the desire for more sustainability content in their courses; (2) universities should serve as models in sustainability; (3) Fresno State could do more to improve their sustainability operations by reducing landfill waste, more sustainable food options on campus, and reducing energy use.
