Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Sustainable Menstruation

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

The Sustainable Menstruation program has expanded and grown since its inception. We continue to expand and reach more students and provide education, awareness and free products including cups, discs, period underwear and reusable pads. One of the most unique and innovative efforts that has grown from this original program was our signage posted in our bathrooms (women, men and gender neutral). We have signage that was designed by a student in 2022 that shows where students can access free traditional menstrual products as well as sustainable options as well. By doing this, we feel we are destigmatizing menstruation on a wider scale and are reaching students who may not have known about our program.

This program is one of the best examples of sustainability since it touches on all 3 pillars- environmental (waste created from single use items), economic (it saves students hundreds of dollars annually to use a sustainable product) and equity (the pink tax is eliminated). In addition, it highlights the health and wellbeing of sustainability as well.

Furthermore, since it's inception, CSUSM has been asked to consult over 7 other universities and colleges about our sustainable menstruation program and provide support to those wanting to start a similar one on their campus.

To date, the program has distributed over 500 sustainable menstrual products.
