Coastal Resiliency, Vulnerabilities, and Seawall

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

The College partnered with the City of Beverly to develop its Coastal Resiliency Plan and is looking to expand upon this document for a more focused plan for the campus. The Office of Sustainability is also participating in the City's ongoing Municipal Vulnerability and Preparedness (MVP) program that is statewide.

Endicott has several large portions of seawalls and three private beaches. Our location provides a unique opportunity to develop a plan and vulnerability assessment that directly relates to sea level rise and increased frequency and strength of storm events caused by climate change. The College is working on rebuilding portions of our seawall damaged in storms in 2018, to meet new FEMA floodplains, incorporate resilience for 100-year storm events, and protect against future sea level rise. This process is expected to be completed in 2024, but permitting and construction has been taking place from 2021-2023. The seawall repairs are expected to contribute significantly to campus resilience, as our coastal campus will increasingly feel the effects of climate change in the face of rising sea levels and more frequent/severe storm events.

This process also provides a great opportunity to use our campus as a living lab and engage our faculty and students.
