SDG Spotlight Campagin

A brief description of the campaign:

This year the Sustainability team launched a new SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) Spotlight Campaign.

This Campaign focused on one SDG each month throughout the academic year to teach and engage students on the Sustainable Development Goals.
The Campaign focused on creating three different engagement opportunities for students on campus:

• Webinar sessions (College-wide) - promoted as “Lunch and learn” events and will be 45 minutes sessions over the lunch break that will dive into one of the Sustainable Development Goals. Sessions will be hosted by the sustainability campaign coordinator and will aim to host a guest speaker from the College to present how NSCC is advancing that SDG. Each webinar a student attends will qualify them for an entry into a draw for a prize, which will be a tuition credit to assist the student with their education costs.

• On-campus events or exhibits (Campus specific) - opportunities for students to engage in person with the campus community. These events will vary in scope and will collaborate with existing NSCC events where possible (Wellness week for example).

• Print resources on the campus sustainability boards (Campus specific)- Campuses will be sent monthly features that can be printed and promoted on the campus sustainability board.


A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:

Through this campaign, 38 students were engaged in webinar sessions. In line with this campaign one month was focused on SDG 2: Zero Hunger, during this month most NSCC campuses offered a week of $5 lunch specials to make affordable lunch options available to students. Food insecurity is a prominent social sustainability issue that disproportionately affects students.
Through this initiative, NSCC provided 1,704 discounted lunches and a number of free pizza lunches(not tracked).

Service Learning Day Campaign

A brief description of the campaign (2nd campaign):

NSCC provides its staff with Service Learning Days (SLD). SLDs are for employees to engage in community service and volunteer work. They allow our staff to contribute to the community on days typically scheduled for work. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the College saw a severe drop in SLD hours used. With restrictions being lifted and people returning to their communities, we wanted to create a campaign to motivate staff to volunteer.

The central sustainability team created an ad campaign that consisted of posters, emails, and newsletter articles that went out to all staff for a period of 4 months. We asked staff to use their SLDs and submit their experience to the team for a chance to win a YETI cooler.


A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):

We used HR's tally of the number of staff participating in SLDs and the total hours submitted per fiscal year to track and monitor the campaign's success.
In 2020/21, 38 staff participated, totalling 328.25 hours submitted
In 2021/22, 64 staff participated, totalling 572.75 hours submitted
In 2022/23, 100 staff participated, totalling 809.25 hours submitted

This is a successful campaign because we've increased the total staff participation since our baseline in 2020/21 and the hours of community service submitted.
