A brief description of the institution’s work college designation, its work-learning-service programs for students, and how these programs address affordability and access:

Approximately 96% of NSCC programs combine classroom learning with learning on the job. Learning on the job as part of your program is called ‘work-integrated learning’, and it’s an important part of preparing to enter the workforce. Graduation from these programs is dependent on the successful completion of work-integrated learning.

Work-integrated learning lets you immerse yourself in meaningful learning outside of the classroom - in the community, with employers and with industry. You grow your skills, get valuable experience, round out your education, test-drive an organization to see if it’s the right fit and build connections.

Depending on your program, there are five ways you can experience work-integrated learning at NSCC:

-Field experience
-Co-operative education
-Internships
-Professional practice
-Sea time

OPTIONAL CO-OP
NSCC has over 50 programs that offer an optional co-operative education component during the Spring/Summer term. Co-op is paid full-time employment that takes place in between first and second years of study and must be a minimum of 12 weeks and 420 hours.

SERVICE LEARNING
A form of work-integrated learning that combines service to the community with learning that supports development of critical thinking, leadership, ethical decision-making, social consciousness, and civic responsibility. Service learning experiences vary by program and can be defined as an outcome of a specific course or an overall program learning outcome.
