Does the institution have at least one sustainability committee?:
Yes

The charter or mission statement of the committee(s) or a brief description of each committee's purview and activities:

NSCC has a number of sustainability committees addressing sustainability in different areas and through different scopes. The SDG Steering Committee is an executive committee focused on providing senior level guidance and functional leadership to embed the 17 SDGs into education, and research. This committee is composed of a number of executive and interdisciplinary leaders that meet quarterly to discuss and make decisions on college-wide sustainability.

Each Campus at the College has a Campus Sustainability Committee which oversees the implementation of the College’s Sustainability objectives and goals as outlined in the strategic plan at the campus level, fosters sustainability literacy, and provides leadership and support for campus initiatives. These committees are led by the campus facility manager and are open to any NSCC staff and students. These committees often oversee the implementation of campus projects, including bike rental programs, campus gardens and other localized projects. These committees are required to meet three times throughout the academic year but many of them meet more frequently with some committees meeting every month.

The Sustainability Team facilitates an additional Sustainability Steering Committee made up of representatives from each of the Campus Sustainability Committees to disseminate information to the campuses from the central office and provides resources and training on sustainability best practices. This committee has main meetings on a quarterly basis and also arranges additional presentations and training when necessary.

Sustainability is part of everything we do. It’s a key organizational value and embedded into our strategic priorities. It encompasses how we design, construct and operate our buildings; how we manage resources; and how we provide a safe, healthy, equitable environment in which to work and learn.

Through our work with Colleges and Institutes Canada, and as one of the first signatories in Canada on the global SDG Accord, we're committed to incorporating sustainability into:

Our teaching and learning
Applied research projects
Day-to-day campus operations and administrative approach
Student life and community engagement activities

In support of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, we’re dedicated to advancing the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs), which aim to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all global citizens.

In addition to our green buildings and sustainable construction, we’re working to address climate change through:

Reducing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions
Adapting to our changing climate
Education on climate change
Reducing water use
Reducing waste streams
