Climate HQ was launched in April 2021 with the mission to serve as SF State's communication hub and broadcast service for climate action.
The Climate Change Certificate program gives students a foundational understanding of climate change’s causes, effects and solutions so they can take action in their communities. While some of the courses that count toward the certificate are in the sciences, the program is not exclusively for science majors. In fact, the program was designed so that students from any major can take any course — there are few to no prerequisites. It’s also open to matriculated and non-matriculated students and students who aren’t working toward a specific degree.

Manzanita Square, (complete project), the New Science Building and new student housing (both under construction) serve as examples of the University's commitment to all electric building construction as part of the Future State physical master plan.
For Manzanita Square, the design team capitalized on the microclimate of the site to employ a super-insulated building envelope design that eliminates cooling load and dramatically reduces heating load. This creates the opportunity for all-electric residences, which will allow for individual metering and empower each resident with complete energy consumption information. The building is achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification.
The New Science Building and the new student housing project are designed to achieve LEED Gold. Both projects are designed to be 100% all-electric buildings with active mechanical heat recovery systems and advanced lighting controls to reduce energy usage.

The San Francisco State University Foundation, the auxiliary foundation of the University, has made sweeping changes to its investment policy that deepen its commitment to socially responsible investing. These updates further promote racial and social justice, environmental sustainability and climate change mitigation, which are key priorities for the University. The changes also uphold the Foundation’s fiduciary duty to reduce investment risks and identify opportunities that would secure endowment growth.
Within five years, the Foundation commits to measurable progress in growing the portfolio's diversity of underrepresented funds and fund managers. In consultation with Cambridge Associates, the Foundation will measure progress quarterly and annually in pursuing a racial justice lens for the endowment’s portfolio, identifying asset managers with ownership by women and/or BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color), or firms or strategies with leadership by women and/or BIPOC.
The Foundation aims to divest from fossil fuel companies by 2025. In the meantime, no more than 5% of its endowment will be invested in fossil fuel companies. By 2040, the Foundation aims for net-zero carbon emissions, a 100% reduction from 2022 levels.
