The University of Arkansas has two major initiatives which encourage students to collaborate with faculty and staff on sustainability research.
The popular U of A Sustainability Minor program requires a capstone sustainability research project from each student before they’re awarded that credential. Students are strongly encouraged to partner with faculty and staff on these projects.
The University of Arkansas Assessment and Sustainable Management of Ecosystem Services Research Experience for Undergrads Program (EcoREU) focuses on research in areas ranging from water quality and urban spring ecology to animal agriculture sustainability. Each REU program accepts and sponsors students every summer from universities all over the United States. The selected students are enrolled in a 1 hour research class and work with faculty members on research projects of their choice during their 10-week stay at the U of A.

The University of Arkansas is strongly encouraging interdisciplinary research through three major programs.
The U of A Executive Director of Sustainability is a faculty member who coordinates and facilitates interdisciplinary research projects across the campus. The Office for Sustainability has funding for interdisciplinary sustainability research as well as other in-kind services to help faculty conduct sustainability research.
The U of A Environmental Dynamics (ENDY) research program’s focus is human-environmental interactions. This includes interdisciplinary research in geophysical, biological, geochemical, and sociocultural interactions related to environmental change. An overarching objective of the ENDY program is to aid development of strategies for sustainable societies based on results of scientific research. The ENDY program hosts a research colloquium each semester to further incentivize collaboration across campus.
The U of A Center for Agriculture and Rural Sustainability (CARS) was established in 2007 as a primary outlet of sustainability research and outreach in the UA Division of Agriculture, and is tasked with the mission of enhancing and sustaining prosperity in rural Arkansas.

The University provides several options for students to pursue education more broadly than one field of undergraduate study might allow, including interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary programs. These programs allow broader instruction and research opportunities, especially in emerging fields that haven’t reached the academic breadth to constitute a department in their own right or in cases in which collaboration between one or more departments allows faculty from each existing department to contribute to the interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary major. Interdisciplinary research is encouraged in most departments.
