PAE-8: Support Programs for Underrepresented Groups

The Center for Diversity & Enrichment provides leadership and coordination for outreach and service to minority communities and students who participate in federally-funded Upward Bound programs. The office provides precollege student development, assistance with facilitating the enrollment process, and programs and activities that support the ability of underserved students to increase their skills to thrive and succeed at the University of Iowa.

Counseling Specialists are available to talk to students about all aspects of their college experience.

Programming for students is offered to enhance the cultural, social, and academic experiences of students. The programs have the goal of building community, celebrating cultures, and educating students on a variety of topics.

TRiO Programs- Upward Bound and Student Support Services foster the success of first-generation and low-income pre-college and college students.

Office of Graduate Inclusion
OGI’s mission is to recruit and retain graduate students from all walks of life while encouraging academic curiosity and discovery. As a community, OGI students share responsibility; individually and collectively to achieve the goals of inclusiveness with the help of faculty and staff mentors.

The Iowa Edge
The Iowa Edge is coordinated by a coalition from UI students, faculty, and staff. Individuals from several academic programs and campus offices plan and implement The Iowa Edge, which is a personal introduction to campus for first-generation and minority college students. The program helps ensure a successful transition to university life.

Celebrating Cultural Diversity Festival
Since 1990, CCDF has given members of the University of Iowa and its surrounding communities an opportunity to learn about each other through food, games, dance, music, literature, storytelling, arts and crafts.

African American Council
The African American Council (AAC) strives to improve the quality of life for African American faculty, staff and students at the University of Iowa.

Council on Disability Awareness
The mission of the Council on Disability Awareness is to advocate for the full development and maintenance of an attitudinal and physical environment that encourages people with disabilities to participate fully in the educational, occupational, social, and cultural life of the University of Iowa.

Council on the Status of Women
The mission of the Council on the Status of Women (CSW) is to ensure an environment that supports the rights of all women at the University of Iowa.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Staff & Faculty Association
The LGBSFA is open to any university employee - merit staff, professional/scientific staff, graduate assistant, faculty, administrator or community member.

Native American Council
The mission of the Native American Council (NAC) is to promote and improve the quality of life of Native American faculty, staff, and students at the University of Iowa.

UI Latino Council
The Latino Council’s mission is to create a university environment that addresses the needs and concerns of Latino faculty and staff, to keep abreast of issues affecting UI Latino students and to serve as an advisory body to the university.

The Hubbard Group
The Hubbard Group was created to address the individual, institutional, and environmental concerns of African American male students, faculty and staff.
