The Yale Office of Sustainability began a project in Fall 2017 to compare and systematize course timing across five professional schools: School of Architecture, Divinity School, School of Forestry & Environmental Studies, School of Management, and the School of Public Health. During the semester, the project expanded to include Yale College standard time patterns. The project has multiple goals: conduct an analysis of most and least popular class meeting times; make recommendations to adjust class meeting patterns in each School to facilitate cross-enrollment; identify opportunities for collaboration between professional schools on sustainability courses; and, consider opportunities to increase undergraduate enrollment in appropriate Professional School courses.
In total, the five professional schools studied offered 476 classes in Fall 2017 with a total of 204 unique class time slots. This degree of inconsistency between schools indicates both that there will be scheduling challenges for students wishing to take classes in other schools, and that the buildings occupancy is probably not as efficient as it could be.
While some schools will maintain certain schedule requirements – such as the Divinity School not scheduling at certain times because of daily chapel service - there are possibilities to create common course blocks and gaps between courses that would allow for cross-school interdisciplinary time slots. All interdisciplinary sustainability-related courses could be scheduled within this isolated time slot.
A meeting with representatives from each school and the office of the registrar introduced a number of possible future projects related to course timing: conduct an opportunity cost analysis for each time slot - this would represent the number of additional classes a student is unable to take, by enrolling in one class; develop a system to classify graduate courses to meet undergraduate requirements; and, work with Yale Parking and Transit to ensure that the shuttle system supports (as possible) standard times and routes, using data on travel times between schools.
