Inventory of the institution’s sustainability research:
A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory:
A member from the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) determined the total number of researchers by the total number of tenure stream faculty and non-tenure stream researchers minus administrators. For the number of sustainability researchers, the schools were polled, with replies from their deans and/or the researchers from the various departments. Furthermore, the FY23 sponsored research awards, expenditures, and proposals were inspected thoroughly, and only the funded projects and their principal investigators (PIs) were added to the list from the research and project administration database. Only work directly related to environmental conservation and/or protection was considered. A member from the Office of the Provost then formatted the spreadsheet and included additional detail available from the Stevens website.
Note: Stevens Institute of Technology consists of three schools and one college: the Charles V. Schaefer, Jr. School of Engineering and Science (SES), the School of Business (Business), the School of Systems and Enterprises (SSE) and the College of Arts and Letters (CAL). The School of Business, SSE and CAL do not have specific academic department structures and were therefore counted as one academic department for the purposes of this report. The Schaefer School does have a specific academic department structure of nine departments, and therefore each department was individually counted.
For the purposes of this credit, the STAR Center that reports directly to SES will be considered a pseudo-department for the question of “Number of academic departments that include at least one employee who conducts sustainability research” but will not be counted specifically as a standalone for the question of “Total number of academic departments that include at least one employee who conducts research”.
