Name of the institution’s featured sustainability program, initiative, or accomplishment:
Developing a green ferry for Galapagos Inter-Island Transport with ESPOL University in Ecuador

A brief description of the institution’s featured program, initiative, or accomplishment:

This senior design project focuses on developing a green ferry for Galapagos Inter-Island Transport. The project involves three naval engineering seniors at Stevens Institute of Technology collaborating with four students from ESPOL University in Ecuador and is funded by the United Nations Development Program. The goal is to develop a vessel design with a focus on using non-fossil fuels, and they have developed a hydrogen fuel cell-based electric ferry design. Raju Datla visited ESPOL University and the Galapagos Islands to discuss directly with the collaborators, the island stakeholders, representatives from the mayor’s office, utility company, boat owners and operators, and local residents.
Raju Datla's collaborator from ESPOL University is visiting Stevens soon and so will the ESPOL University President, who will visit Stevens' president and provost. The plan is to expand this partnership into long-term collaboration that includes wind and wave energy technologies and coastal resiliency.

Name of a second highlighted sustainability program/initiative/accomplishment:
NameCoach

A brief description of the second program/initiative/accomplishment:

A person's name is central to their identity. Stevens has a diverse community of students and employees from over 70 countries. Pronouncing names correctly is challenging and when people are unsure, they often completely sidestep calling someone by name, detracting from personal interaction. This initiative was proposed because it contributes to a sustainable community where members feel valued and are therefore more engaged in the enterprise.

NameCoach was contracted to embed audio clip name pronunciations in email signatures to easily learn and remember how to say someone’s name. This is a highly visible university-wide initiative to foster belonging and inclusion. Incentivizing the Stevens community to adopt this technology is critical to the success of the investment and effort.

The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion worked with a Stevens student to contribute to the development and implementation of a marketing strategy. A significant increase in community participation resulted from an innovative video and a contest that the student developed and posted to social media. To date, more than 2000 students and employees have recorded their names.
