Development of green filter granules for the removal of phosphorus and metals from stormwater runoff

Phosphorus and metal pollution in stormwater runoff is a major concern because they can cause environmental and human health risks. This polluted stormwater runoff is mainly conveyed through catch basins that are conventionally implemented along road curbs. However, catch basins are not designed for removing phosphorus and metals. To address this problem, green filter granules were generated from drinking water treatment residuals (WTR), which is a non-hazardous byproduct of the water treatment process, via a green method to serve as a sustainable filter material. The Stevens team has applied for a non-provisional patent on the technology. The removal efficiency of the green filter granules, also called WTR granules, in removing phosphorus and metals was tested in laboratory conditions followed by a field testing in a parking lot on Stevens’ campus by Stevens students and faculty. The removal performance of the WTR granules both in the lab- and field conditions were extremely satisfactory. The superior removal of phosphorus, copper, lead, and zinc by the WTR granules was observed in the field where several uncertainties and external influences were expected to impact removal performance. No water ponding or significant disintegration of the WTR granules was observed over the monitoring period of 12 storm events. Therefore, WTR granules are a green and cost-effective technology that can be easily implemented for addressing stormwater pollution without requiring additional land allocation.
