UMMS is committed to aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goal to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. Aligning the curriculum with UN SDG, included UMMS goals of expanding collaborative learning experiences to advance patient-centered practices and research through interprofessional team-based learning.By doing so, our trainees will advance our core missions in primary care education and practice and biomedical research, as well as our special responsibilities to provide care to vulnerable populations and to engage in public sector medicine.

Additionally, the System-Wide Sustainability Policy includes a goal that (1) the UMass Sustainability Council will work with their respective campus
curriculum governance units to identify where Academic and Research
Programming and Community Engagement involving Sustainability already exists, and to explore more formal incorporation into the core curriculum and identified learning outcomes. A specific goal for UMMS is to improve is STARS score, including AC credits.

In addition, the System-Wide Sustainability Policy includes a goal that the UMass Sustainability Council will work with their respective campus
curriculum governance units to identify where Academic and Research
Programming and Community Engagement involving Sustainability already exists,

Current interim goals set by the Climate Action Plan include 25% reduction in GHG emissions below 2007 baseline by 2025, 50% reduction by 2040, 75% reduction by 2050, and climate neutrality by 2060. UMMS will continue to report greenhouse gas emissions through ACUPCC to track progress on meeting goals.

Additionally, Massachusetts E.O. 484 set greenhouse gas reduction goals including a 25% reduction below 2002 by 2012, 40% reduction by 2020, and an 80% reduction by 2050. UMMS continues to report to the State on greenhouse gas emissions.

The Climate Action Plan outline strategies for building efficiency including continued energy and water efficiency improvements, upgrades to the HVAC systems, laboratories, plumbing and fixtures, lighting, refrigeration and other plug loads. Green building and LEED certification is another component addressed in the Plan, specifically as it relates to the construction of the Ambulatory Care Center and the Albert Sherman Center which were certified LEED Silver and LEED gold respectively.

The 2016 CAP outlines a goal of “(1) Expand the use of real-time building level energy performance monitoring to provide facility management with critical information as to the status of each campus building in terms of energy use, (2) Establish procedures that will facilitate a review of UMMS’s progress against its energy use and GHG emission reduction goals on an annual basis, (3) Prepare a formal update to this Climate Action Plan every 3-5 years

UMMS is additionally committed to E.O. 484 which established green building standards for State building. Under this E.O. 484 building must achieve Massachusetts LEED Plus green building standards which requires energy performance to be 20% better than the Massachusetts Energy Code, reducing outdoor water consumption by 50% and indoor water consumption by 20%.

UMMS uses site energy use intensity and domestic water consumption as the primary metrics to gauge building performance. Energy Efficiency projects are tracked and reviewed monthly with facilities engineering and construction to ensure projects are moving forward. UMass Medical School reports annual on building performance.

Additionally, the UMass Sustainability Policy establishes the following goals relating to green building design and sustainable operation:Any new construction must meet the MA Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Plus green building standards, (LEED most current version) or other standards as identified in Goal 1.1 as being necessary to achieve carbon reduction commitments and meet sustainability objectives

UMMS has the goals aligned with the State's E.O. 484 to reduce in EUI of 20% below 2004 baseline by 2012,and 35% by 2020.

Strategies for reduction in energy use include continued energy efficiency upgrades to the HVAC systems, lighting, refrigeration and other plug load.

UMMS also received energy efficiency project recommendation through the State's Accelerated Energy Program, which will be used to help guide energy projects moving forward.

Energy efficiency projects are tracked and reviewed monthly with facilities engineering and construction to ensure projects are moving forward and used to identities measurable targets for reductions in energy use intensity.

UMass Medical has a goal of achieving Green Restaurant Association certification, which aligns with the UMass Sustainability Policy of establishing goals relating to sustainable food and dining.

In addition, through the UMass Sustainability Policy, UMMS strives for its campus foodservice operation to procure sustainable food products while maintaining accessibility and affordability for all students and campus patrons.

UMass Medical School's current dining services vendor reports sustainable food purchases monthly and annual sustainable food purchases are reported to the Board of Trustees as part of the annual sustainability report.

The UMass System-Wide Sustainability Policy calls to "Establish Environmentally-Preferable Products Procurement Program (EPP) and continue to implement annual procurement goals to move toward alignment with the standards of the Environmental Purchasing Advisory Council where ever appropriate and consistent with available funding."

STARS Credits OP-11, 12, 13, 14 is used to track this metric on an annual basis, and the goals for UMMS is to improve its STARS credit scoring.

This data is presented in our annual sustainability report to the UMass Board of Trustees.

The UMass Sustainability Policy includes a goal to "reduce vehicle fuel consumption of the University vehicle fleet through promoting the use of public transportation, reducing the number of single-occupancy vehicles, and increasing the use of other alternative fuel transportation for faculty, staff, and students."

Performance in this category through an annual Rideshare Report which is a mandatory requirement of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.

UMass Medical School has a goal of increasing waste diversion 2-3% annually, in accordance with being a member of the EPA's Wise Program. This goal setting and annual reporting is a requirement of participation in the Waste Wise program.

The UMass Sustainability Policy also includes a goal to "Employ strategies around preventative measures in waste diversion to promote source reduction, re-use, and recycling of used materials."

UMMS Diversity Summit III, held in 2017, focused on creating goals of increasing the number of underrepresented minorities (URM) faculty and students at UMMS.

UMass Medical School and UMass Memorial also have a Health Equity Diversity and Inclusion Council which established an FY17 goal of increasing the collection and use of race, ethnicity, language preference, and other relevant socio-demographic data to enhance patient care and quality improvement efforts.

UMass Medical School's diversity and inclusion office host diversity summits to prioritize and align goals and objectives across the institution.
