The Diversity and Equal Opportunity office engages with students and faculty through numerous events throughout the year which equip the institution's faculty and staff to better serve students from low-income backgrounds.

The Summer High School Health Careers Program is a tuition-free four-week residential program for sophomores and juniors in high school that are interested in entering the health care professions. This program expose low-income high school students who are under-represented in medicine to the healthcare professions, biomedical and biotechnology careers at an early stage in their academic development.
A brief description of the institution's scholarships for low-income students:
The institution embraces federal assistance in awarding "Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students." This program, funded by the Department of Health and Human Services, the Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students (SDS) Program provides awards to students who come from an environment that inhibits individuals from obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities required to enroll in and graduate from a medical school. The SDS Program also considers students who come from families with annual incomes below low-income thresholds.

The institution has several outreach programs such as the Worcester Pipeline Collaborative, High School Health Careers Program and the Summer Enrichment Program, which are used to recruit students from low-income backgrounds. DIO supports the Office of Medical Education in the development and execution of the BaccMD Pathways Program. Selecting applicants from our UMass undergraduate institutions, the program contributes to the creation of a student body in the Medical School that will contribute to a diverse health care work force to serve the needs of the commonwealth, with a focus on primary care and under served communities.
