A brief description of the institution’s sustainability partnerships with the local community:

At Wartburg we strive to make service pervasive across all areas of campus, which makes it nearly impossible for a student to graduate without having done some type of service work. In recent years we have tried to increase the number of potential partners that work in the field of sustainability. For example, through course-based community engagement over 20 streams were monitored/re-mediated during 300 hours of service at Hartman Reserve Nature Center.
Through the efforts of the Volunteer Action Center, our student-run service organization, over 54,000 cans and bottles were recycled, and over 100 bags of garbage (litter) were collected on campus.
Service Trips engaged in partnerships for sustainability. For example, Cumberland Trails, TN Location: Crossville, TN Student Leaders: Rachel Keber '11, Eric Isaacs '10, Stephanie Berndt'11 Advisor: Beth Goskeson, RHD Do you have an interest in helping out the environment and outdoor recreation? If you do, then this is the trip for you! Our trip will be assisting the Cumberland Trail Conference with constructing part of the Cumberland Scenic Trail. This trail will act as one of the only remaining unbroken greenways in Tennessee and will help to preserve a portion of the very bio-diverse Cumberland Plateau. The work we will be doing pertains to trail maintenance and construction and will be done in remote areas of the Appalachian Mountains. No prior trail experience is necessary, just a desire to work outdoors and learn about the culture and environment of this unique area.
