Does the institution have programs in place to protect and/or create wildlife habitat on institution-owned land?:
Yes

A brief description of the wildlife habitat program, policy, or practice:

The majority of the land at RRU is forest. This land is relatively untouched and provides an excellent habitat for wildlife. This habitat is protected in many ways, such as requiring an environmental assessment when there is any major work or construction to be done. There is a removal program to address invasive species. Hazard trees are trimmed and left to be wildlife trees. Trimming of hedges and any work that may impact nesting birds and wildlife is done after nesting season to minimize impact.

There are many streams and watercourses on site which are fish habitat. These areas are monitored and protected as any work that needs to be done within the vicinity of these area is timed around guidelines set up by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Esquimalt Lagoon is a Federal Bird Sanctuary, and therefore is protected.
