UMass Boston is a partner and funder of the Stone Living Lab, alongside the National Park Service, Boston Harbor Now, the City of Boston, Massachusetts DCR, the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, and the James M. & Cathleen Stone Foundation.
The Stone Living Lab conducts research around the Boston Harbor to answer questions surrounding climate change and adaptation, coastal resilience, environmental justice, and more. The Lab partnership engages the broader community – including students, civic organizations, and advocates– to co-develop solutions to problems alongside scientists, including challenges related to permitting, financing, and community benefits necessary for implementing the solutions needed.
UMass Boston provides the living lab with classroom and lab space, as well as research vessels and dock spaces, for researchers to complete field and lab work.

"The Center for Sustainable Enterprise and Regional Competitiveness (SERC) at UMass Boston is leading a 2-year project funded by the U.S. Environment Protection Agency (EPA) to provide pollution prevention technical assistance to Massachusetts craft breweries. The project aims to help the brewing industry reduce the use of energy, water, and chemicals and prevent waste while achieving financial savings and improved brand recognition. The project involves interviews with brewery owners, site visits, and environmental assessments of Massachusetts craft breweries. The work is part of a larger New England Initiative to develop a common assessment and recognition program for ‘green’ breweries."

While Boston has emerged as one of the nation's most diverse metropolitan regions, people of color are significantly underrepresented within our region's urban planning and design professions. UMass Boston's newly launched Summer Program in Urban Planning at Madison Park Technical Vocational High School in Roxbury reflects our campus's commitment to address this issue.
Students participating in the Summer Program in Urban Planning will be enhancing their understanding of the critical role urban planners play in investigating and designing strategies to mitigate the impact of extreme heat on local communities.
