Adjusted net Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions:
Performance year Baseline year
Adjusted net GHG emissions 17,941.82 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 24,018.99 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Start and end dates of the performance year and baseline year (or three-year periods):
Performance year Baseline year
Start date July 1, 2021 July 1, 2018
End date June 30, 2022 June 30, 2019

A brief description of when and why the GHG emissions baseline was adopted:

For the purposes of the STARS report, FY2019 was used as the data was available. As data is further studied, prior years will be added to the SIMAP public reporting.
UMass reports annually to the MA DOER Leading by Example Program, which uses the 2004 baseline year as a benchmark for tracking progress on scopes 1 & 2. Since 2004 UMass Boston has grown significantly in size; both energy-intensive and non-energy-intensive buildings have been built and removed. Normalizing for building uses, especially for the science complex and garages recently deconstructed, will help build a better comparative profile.

Figures needed to determine “Weighted Campus Users”:
Performance year Baseline year
Number of students resident on-site 1,063 1,063
Number of employees resident on-site 4 4
Number of other individuals resident on-site 1 1
Total full-time equivalent student enrollment 12,874 13,215
Full-time equivalent of employees 2,010 2,050
Full-time equivalent of students enrolled exclusively in distance education 389 399
Weighted Campus Users 11,139 11,417.25

Adjusted net Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions per weighted campus user:
Performance year Baseline year
Adjusted net Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions per weighted campus user 1.61 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 2.10 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Percentage reduction in adjusted net Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions per weighted campus user from baseline:
23.44

Gross floor area of building space, performance year:
3,072,217 Gross square feet

Floor area of energy intensive building space, performance year:

Laboratory space 85,245 Square feet
Healthcare space 2,040 Square feet
Other energy intensive space 0 Square feet

EUI-adjusted floor area, performance year:
3,246,787 Gross square feet

Adjusted net Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions per unit of EUI-adjusted floor area, performance year:
0.01 MtCO2e per square foot

A brief description of the institution’s GHG emissions reduction initiatives:

Energy conservation efforts have been implemented in high-energy-use buildings like the Science Center during the pandemic and maintained post-pandemic. Scheduling and hiring energy management personnel have helped bring energy use down. An old science center was torn down during this time. The first residence hall at UMass Boston opened in 2018; it is a LEED building.

The grid has become greener through the efforts of the RPS.
