A brief description of the wildlife habitat program, policy, or practice:
In 2006, UNF President John Delaney designate 382 acres of land as the Sawmill Slough Preserve. The stated purpose of the Sawmill Slough Preserve is to assure that the area persists in its natural condition. This protected area protects a number of native plants and animals associated with this habitat. The Preserve also serves as a great place for UNF faculty, staff and students to enjoy a quiet hike or to view wildlife while on campus.
In addition, the area provides UNF a unique opportunity to conduct hands-on environmental research. A number of research projects are be conducting within the Sawmill Slough, including, but not limited to a Campus Natural Assets Inventory and gopher tortoise research.
