A brief description of steps taken to ensure that e-waste is recycled responsibly, workers’ basic safety is protected, and environmental standards are met:

EICCD contracts with Midwest Electronic Recovery of Walford IA for pickup and proper disposal of e-waste from throughout the District. MER is the largest computer and electronics recycling center in Iowa, and was the recipient of the Governor's Environmental Excellence Award in 2003. MER demanufactures electronics on-site,refurbishes computer equipment for re-sale, and guarentees processing of CRTs on site in a responsible an environmentally-friendly way. EICCD's Iowa Waste Exchange representative Julie Plummer has toured the MER facility, and the Iowa Waste Exchange recommends MER to business & industry across Iowa for e-waste management.

A brief description of the electronic waste recycling program for institution-generated materials:

EICCD calls Midwest Electronic Recovery for pick-up of e-waste from throughout the District on an as-needed basis. Midwest Electronic Recovery provides a summary of items recycled, and payment for any working monitors. during FY2010, EICCD recycled 12,805 pounds of e-waste.

A brief description of the electronic waste recycling program for student-generated materials :

As a commuter-based institution, EICCD does not have a specific electronic waste recycling program for students. The local solid waste management agencies in all of the counties wehre EICCD has facilities do accept e-waste for recycling at no charge from all residents. The Waste Commission of Scott County has a certified electronics de-manufacturing facility, where materials from all of these solid waste management agencies are taken for de-manufacture and recycling. Information about recycling of personal computers via the Waste Commission of Scott County as well as local Best Buy stores is provided throughout the community and on the EICCD sustainability website.
